An American Sketch | David Tymm
Overview
Currently on backorder. New stock expected 16th February.
An American Sketch is a travelogue describing a four-month, 16,500-mile motorcycle tour of North America in 2024.
While motorcycling, roads and landscape are the common denominators, the articles are broader in scope including observations on art, architecture, literature, cinema, television, music, history and the socio/political climate, past and present. Food & drink also feature prominently along with occasional autobiographical details.
Travelling mainly solo meant the author met a varied cast of characters. The majority were mainstream Americans but adult film performers, retired cannabis growers, cult members and political obsessives also feature.
An American Sketch is 78,000 words and 61 original high-quality photograph reproductions presented as 60 chapters and covers the original inspiration for the journey, the specific circumstances that allowed it, the planning involved for anyone thinking of doing something similar and then the journey itself.
If you like the writing of AA Gill, Bill Bryson, Bruce Chatwin, Paul Theroux or Ted Simon as much as the author does, you may enjoy An American Sketch as these served as inspiration. Likewise, the wonderful Cape Light by Joel Meyerowitz remains peerless in the eyes of the author as a definitive work of colour photography and influences many of the images.
Reviews
A truly special book, one you’ll return to again and again.
This book is far more than a motorcycle road trip, it’s a beautifully crafted journey through the soul of North America. There is breathtaking photography with thoughtful storytelling, capturing not just landscapes, but the feeling of each place. Every page feels intentional, reflective, and deeply human.
The images are stunning, cinematic, and immersive, while the narrative carries a quiet honesty that pulls you in and makes you want to slow down and truly experience the ride alongside the author. You don’t need to be a motorcyclist to appreciate this book; it’s for anyone who loves travel, freedom, exploration, and the stories hidden between the miles.
The production quality is exceptional, making it as much a coffee-table masterpiece as it is a personal travel memoir. It’s inspiring, grounding, and leaves you with a renewed sense of curiosity for the world.
A truly special book, one you’ll return to again and again.

An American Triumph
Many people will have the desire to undertake an epic journey, few will actually have the means, opportunity and bravery to actually turn it into reality. Even fewer will be able to write about it with such style. The introduction lets the reader know what a logistical challenge a 4-month motorcycle journey, on a bike from UK, will be around the USA. And then we are in to journey from state to state criss-crossing the entire country with a brief foray or two into Canada.
So is this a 'self-help' manual for your own journey? No.
It must be a guide to America's greatest sights then? No.
In that case it must be a tale of motorcycling with limited appeal. Absolutely not.
The author's strange mix of staying in budget hotels whilst dining in the best restaurants is fascinating as are the anecdotes from the people he met on his travels.
The photography is great, enhanced by the QR links to more at the end of each chapter.
My favourite pieces are those about the challenges with the weather and the motorcycle.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.
